This article reminds me of reading the entirety of Kant’s ‘Critique of Pure Reason’ in high school and being virtually none the better for it afterwards.
Now when I read non-fiction, I read more intentionally and frequently re-read paragraphs or entire pages. I’ll also put the book down for a minute and try to mentally run through what I just read. Writing about a topic after reading helps solidify things too — as was the case with my recent piece about Modern Monetary Theory.
