My guess is evopsych/psychological egoist types would respond that our own perceived thoughts and experiences are merely muddled expressions of our ‘true’ self interest and are therefore ‘illusory’ in some way.
This sort of remind me of the debate over free will and compatibilism where incompatibilists insist that the deterministic reality of “p q r” trumps our own experience of “x y z” free will in terms of legitimacy. It seems to me both arguments fail in a similar way.
