Missing from this discussion is the role of taxes in driving the value of currency. So long as a sovereign entity levies a tax on the unit of account it issues, it has at least relative control over the currency’s value. This is why bitcoin will always remain a peculiar commodity, unless some government decides to commit fiscal suicide and begin accepting bitcoin as tax payment.
